Popeye + Indiana Jones = Love

Hello Friends,

As you probably know, my wonderful boyfriend, Chuck Forsman, and I, just moved to Providence, RI. We have a beautiful apartment, and so many awesome friends! And, like a million other people our age, we moved here with not very much, and are trying to hack it as artists and live off of a part-time job. And Chuck just got a job! I work at the wonderful New Harvest Coffee Roasters in Pawtucket, where I worked when I lived here before.

But money is still tight, and Chuck made a beautiful beautiful page of comics, which he is selling as a full-color print for only 20 dollars, to try and make rent this month.

Here's a lil' of what he says:

I drew six scenes from Raiders as daily Popeye strips and tried to color them to look like they appeared in a newspaper from the 30’s. I put them all together as an 11”x17” poster that you can frame, put in your bathroom or place it behind that San Diego magnet on your fridge. I am only printing 100 of these these so they are a limited thing. If it proves that people like it then maybe I’ll do Temple of Doom or another movie. Maybe I should do Jaws. That would be kind of perfect.

Monster at SPX!

Here's a sample for a REALLY EXCITING upcoming anthology (it'll be at SPX!) that I'm in (so are Chuck and other awesome people). It's a new issue of Monster, the comics anthology put together by the dudes of Fort Thunder (the last issue came out 9 years ago).

Chuck and I are moving to Providence in a month, which we're very excited about, so it's extra awesome and special to be included in this comic. Right now we're living at my mom's house in MA surrounded by animals and crafts and a giant inflatable dinosaur. It rules.

hope to see you next weekend!

New Urban Arts, Zines on a Bus, a Love Letter

In The Studio: Summer 2009

When I lived in Providence year before last, a place called New Urban Arts was a huge part of my life. It still is! Even though I am further away and holed up in a little town drawing little comics.

New Urban Arts is a lot of (amazing) things, and it is mostly a space for high school age people and older artist people to be together and be creative. It changes lives. But anyway, the main reason I am writing this post is to call attention to:

a) my friend Andrew Oesch who is about to embark on a trip on a bus powered by grease, which also happens to have a photocopier in it, and

b) a group at New Urban Arts who is very near to my heart called the Zine Team, who used said bus-copier to make multiple copies of a collaborative zine in 4.5 hours, for which they got 64 submissions that same day. If that doesn't make any sense, read this blog post, and here you can also read about Andrew's Imminent Amazing Adventure.

I am continually inspired by all these amazing people around me. I am so lucky to know them. Lately I've been feeling like I've only been thinking about dollars and how to make them, and I want that to change. Soon get ready for a long winded post about John Porcellino, who visited CCS this week and blew my mind to pieces.

A project for this semester's Survey of the Drawn Story class. I'm not that happy with it, maybe I'll do it over someday. With more information and more quotes from other people in Providence that I know. Because I'm not really sure about a lot of this stuff, and I want to get it right.

Oh and P.S. the greatest interview of our time
